-The late John Lewis, Across That Bridge: Life Lessons and a Vision for Change

What are civil rights?

The most basic definition of civil rights is the inherent rights everyone has bestowed on them by the government. It means equal protection under the law regardless of one’s race, religion, sex, disability, age, or other personal characteristics.

Some examples of civil rights include:

  • the right to vote
  • the right to a fair trial
  • the right to public education
  • the right to use government services

Examples of civil rights laws

Civil Rights Act of 1964

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a landmark civil rights and labor legislative achievement that ended segregation in public spaces and banned discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

It prohibited segregation based on the color of someone’s skin from schools, employment, and public accommodation including courthouses, parks, restaurants, theaters, sports arenas, and hotels.

Voting Rights Act of 1965

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 prohibits racial discrimination in voting in the United States. It is designed to enforce the voting rights guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution in the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments.

This Act secured the right to vote for racial minorities throughout the country.

Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990

Similar to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities. It prohibits discrimination in employment, public accommodations, transportation, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services.

The role of civil rights lawyers

When an individual or group has their civil rights infringed on by another individual or institution, it is their right to file a civil lawsuit against that offender. Our role as civil rights attorneys is to obtain a full range of remedies for our clients, including compensation, injunctive relief to undo the effects of civil rights violations on individuals and groups, and punitive damages to change the future behavior of defendants.
