An Apple a Day

Last summer a Birmingham woman was awarded $16 million dollars in damages as a result of a botched delivery of her youngest child. The woman chose the particular hospital because of its natural birthing campaign, but she got more than what she bargained for. The woman suffered an injury causing extreme nerve damage, which will cause her chronic pain daily for the rest of her life. The case shed light on the fact that businesses, especially hospitals, must be honest in advertising.

When a person hears the title, “Doctor,” the first adjectives that probably come to mind are “helper” or “healer.” Because they are human, the truth is that even doctors make mistakes – some of which could have been avoided. The woman receiving the $16 million-dollar verdict never expected to be pursuing action against a doctor or hospital because her father is a physician. However, she was injured, and although she may never live another day pain-free, she deserved the awarded damages.
